As is the case in many suburbs around the country, our local DVD rental shop recently closed down. I think many businesses these days can’t afford the rents to sustain the large, cavernous commercial spaces needed to house all those DVDs. Especially when smaller, more accessible operations are popping up instead.
Enter from stage right, Oovie.

We’ve been renting our movies from our local Oovie dispenser machine for a while now. Adam discovered it first, liking how they were a) cheaper than typical new releases and b) more convenient. A swipe of your credit card and you’re done. The selection is pretty rounded too, titles for all ages, and its a pretty unlucky day when you discover that the machine is out of the particular movie you wanted (not unlike a store, actually).
When Oovie gave me a credit voucher to go spend, it was lucky that I could go and spend it on my own, as Adam was out of town with the kids. I’ve not had free reign on choice for ages. So I picked the movie I wanted to watch the most AND that I knew Adam would want to watch the least. It was this one.
Adam’s care factor: zero.
In retrospect, incredible as it was, perhaps I should’ve picked a movie with more of a happier tone and less of a ‘we’re all going to die’ theme. I wandered around the house after it was finished at a bit of a loss. Then again, I probably would’ve if I wasn’t alone either.
But to business!
For those of you who are wondering, here is a map where you can locate your nearest Oovie machine. This will come in handy when you read the below section because…
… thanks to their generosity, Oovie have a very special giveaway for readers: a $350 Oovie gift card especially for movie redemption. That’s a lot of nights in where your entertainment costs are well and truly covered!
Read below for further details.
Terms and Conditions:
1. One entry per person. Australian residents only.
2. Competition closes at midnight Friday 20th July (Eastern Australian Time) and I will contact the winner shortly thereafter.
3. To enter you must leave a comment answering this question: ‘What movies(s) would you want to rent if you won the voucher?’ Winner will be selected by a random number generator.
4. If contact cannot be made within 48 hours, I reserve the right to redraw another winner.
Good luck!
Also, if you’re super keen to give it a go and are looking for a something to ride out the holidays, Oovie have an offer open to everyone at the moment: a winter 2-for-1 special. Register before Monday 16th July to be eligible! The offer expires 31st July, but that’s plenty of bunkering-down time to watch some movies.

Edit: Competition has now closed. Good luck!

If I won the voucher I’d use it to rent a whole heap of romantic comedies! They are my favorite genre of movie. My Big Fat Greek Wedding, What Happens In Vegas, Pretty Woman, and What’s Your Number all would be on my list!
With a five year old in the mix, my choice would have to be family friendly. Movies like ‘The Muppets’, ‘Hugo’ and anything Disney would be at the top of my list.
Julien gave me a collage of Captain America cartoons for my birthday, so I’d really like to “catch up” on the character’s mythology by seeing the film. And, um, maybe some other superhero movies? *blush*

If I were fortunate enough to win the voucher, the first film I’d select to rent would be “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” — I’ve seen the original Swedish version and I’m now reading Larsson’s Millennium trilogy as a result, but … I’d like to see how much of the “Hollywood treatment” the film has been given now starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.
ps. after watching Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth Salander I can understand why Ridley Scott chose her to be a Ripley-esque character in “Prometheus” -)
Last weekend, I was away with my boyfriend in beautiful Tasmania. The weather was amazing, the food great, and we had a great time. After exhausting ourselves throughout the day on trips to various tourist sites, we returned via Woolworthes to pick up some food for dinner, and thought about buying a DVD to watch in the hotel room.
After looking for a while, we baulked at paying over $20 for a B grade DVD, and something we would most likely only watch once.
As we were exiting, the Oovie DVD Rental machine caught my eye. I have seen these before (My local supermarket has one too), but had never really stopped to see how they work, or what they offer to a consumer.
I was pleasantly surprised by the ease of use, the DVD selection, and the whole DVD delivery and return process.

If I won, I’d rent out action movies / science fiction movies, and maybe the occasional ‘chick flick’! It’s especially good if they have all the latest releases, way cheaper then renting them from rapidly disappearing video stores.
I would rent the entire Pixar range of movies…. Cars (1&2), Toy Story (1-3), Up, Wall-e, the Incredibles, Monsters Inc, Brave, etc.
I can’t even say that I am renting them for the kids….
Then I would work through every trilogy I could think of… Die Hard, Star Wars (Original only!), Terminator, Indiana Jones, Back to the Future, Matrix, etc
I’ve been eyeing the Oovie machine at our local shops wondering about borrowing from them.
I would love to borrow the complete Underworld selection and get lost in an alternative universe for a while.

If I won I would be grabbing anything space cowboyish for me, I love the sound effects and watching explosions in space. Then there would be chick flicks for the OH so I can spend time hiring hookers and running them over to get my money back in GTA on the PS2 without interruption. Is there anything worse than interruptions when with a hooker you plan on mowing down after?
I think some romance and kids and drama. Something for everyone
If I won I would hire romance which I do not watch much of and maybe hire space things for the other half.
Sadly I have never rented a DVD from the shop for the grown-ups! It’s always been emergency Barbie DVDs for sick days and movie nights! So I would probably start catching up on some of the DVD series that I have missed out on, dexter, true blood, even sold old west wing. Then I would send the girls to grandma and commence with the stay-at-home version of date night!

If I won the voucher I would rent ps I love you, 27 dresses and new years eve
I prefer foreign, arthouse films but rarely gets to rent one as due to budget constraints, I often end up choosing a family film that everyone can watch & enjoy. I just keep a mental note of the movies I really, really like in hopes I can watch them someday like Coco Avant Chanel, Melancholia, Martha Marcy May Marlene, The Artist & Beautiful Lies.
I would rent Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Elizabeth with Cate Blanchett as I still haven’t seen it!!
We’ve discovered oovie too, I love them. So much easier than traditional movie rentals. I never seem to get to pick a movie, so I’d be totally selfish and choose something just for me. (Just this once). A romantic comedy I haven’t seen, like The Vow, New Year’s Eve, or Chalet Girl.
