My winter reading pile

June 8, 2010

Our local library closed on Sunday for two months of extensions and refurbishment. As anyone who knows me down there – or here, too, don’t you? – this closure will leave a bit of a hole in my life. Visiting the library is an essential part of my weekly routine. Until August, I shall have to visit one of the several branches nearby, which will be good for me to go discover.

That’s if I need to go at all. As you see, I made the most of my last visit on Sunday:

winter reading

When I was out last Saturday night (more on that another day) I was talking about how I hadn’t read The Silver Donkey* since I was a child and would like to again. I’m currently splitting my time between two: John Ajvide Lindqvist’s Handling the Undead (not pictured, borrowed previously) and Cassandra Golds’ The Museum of Mary Child.

So if I’m not around the ‘Net or Twitter much this winter, you know where I’ll be: in bed with a hot drink and a hot water bottle under my toes, reading.

Or writing.

I have plans.

*Updated to add: The book I read as a child was actually The Silver Sword. The Silver Donkey was only released in 2004. Thanks to Anna for putting me right :)

Hi Karen,

‘Addition’ is a real treat.

There’s a very funny passage where the protagonist reflects on what she could say at Parent-Teacher night. Laughed long and hard.

Enjoy!

I can also recommend ‘Addition’. It’s fun, fast and interesting. Recently read and enjoyed ‘The Museum of Mary Child’ as well. Can’t comment on the others. Have fun!

I met Toni recently and she was the most delightful, open, warm person, so I am looking forward to Addition!

Wasn’t Sonya Hartnett’s Silver Donkey only written in about 2006?

Hmmm.. Anna. You have a point. 2004, to be exact. Now what book am I confusing this with?…hmm…that makes me quite a duffer, doesn’t it?

I must go try and think what the other book is…

I think it was set in Poland. I do believe a phone call to my old high school teacher is on the cards!

My God, Anna, you are a genius.

YES YES YES!

I was almost right: “The Silver ..” bit slipped me up. Almost right ;)

It’s been on the tip of my tongue for this past half hour. Thank you for giving me some piece of mind!
