Committing a reader’s atrocity or act of genius? Pondering ‘The Bookseat’

May 5, 2010

I bought Adam a present the other week.

Just for those of you who don’t have a relationship such as ours – which I do like to think as somewhat ‘normal’ – what, of course, I mean by my opening sentence is ‘I bought Adam a present the other day that was really for me but shhhh let’s hope he doesn’t figure it out; he will like it, I will get to use it, and my what a cunning soul I am‘.

This time would be dicey, however, because this Bookseat was bright purple (I had no option in that regard, it was from Savers, after all) and therefore conspicious.

The look on Adam’s face when I handed it over to him told me that he would not be fooled, no way, no how.

“What’s this?”
“A present!”
“What do I want that for? I have arms! I have arms that can hold up a book! And HANDS too!”

And so on.

Now, I admit, it does look a little like a dementedly-shaped elven cap…

But it isn’t bad.

So what do you think? Have you got one or seen one? Are they marvellous or do they do for reading what Snuggies do for blankets?

My sister got one for Christmas and loved it, and at the time I really wanted one too. But I’ve realized that, since I do most of my reading lying down, it probably wo’t work so well for me as it looks like it sits best on knees.

And now I am sad, because there is one less thing that I want in the world :(

I’ve mostly used it as a prop for sheet music while I’ve been practising the violin (yes! I’ve started taking lessons) so it has been useful in that respect. Otherwise it lives by the side of my bed, a little neglected … :)
