We’re supposed to be eating a whole lot of lamb today, according to Sam Kekovich and the MLA (Meat and Livestock Australia), however I find as those ads grow increasingly tedious, they actually have triggered a sort of…weary defiance within me. If anything, they make me want to boycott meat altogether.
I hope, with whatever menu you choose, that you have a fine, happy day. We shall be taking it easy.

One of those ads was just on and all you could hear in our house was a chorus of “shut up Sam!”.
I have such mixed feelings about Australia Day, sometimes I want to refer to it as Invasion Day, the Cronulla Riots and the dark ages known as the Howard Years have turned patriotism into nationalism, but I remember so fondly the flags flying during the Sydney Olympics and the immense pride that I felt. Everytime I see a racist sticker on the back of a ute telling people that Australia is full I feel like scratching a swastika into their paintwork. I’m trying to reconcile my feelings and remember that this country is a great country, rich in multiculturalism and the positive aspects of ‘mateship’.
I feel similarly Mark. When I start to feel bad or confused, I look at my daughter, who for her the flag is such a simple symbol, one she’s still learning. I can just promote the positivity she has, and that I have – certainly – and hope that will buoy me.
Happy Australia Day. We gave in to Kekovich pressure and had some lamb kebabs and sausage sandwiches. Both were yummy- the kebabs particularly so.
Waved my flag proudly.
