Finishing my Story #4 – Domesticities

February 6, 2009

It was almost a year ago when I talked about our debating whether to move house or not. I guess it proves these things go in cycles when I say that we’re looking again, this time at couple places in our local area: one a ‘renovators delight’ and the other more of a ‘move right in’ kind. The main attraction to moving is that these places have more land. Not much by country standards, but it’s still healthy. The kids can run around, have some grass. At the moment they only have concrete and a bit of decking. It’s not going to be an easy decision by any means, and I might go into it a bit more if Adam and I decide to seriously pursue either one.

Learning an instrument

Yes, we bought a keyboard a while ago but as it’s turned out to be The World’s Greatest Ever Waste of Money we recently bought a guitar. Just a very basic model with nylon strings. So far Adam and I have only been following online tutorials and will have to get lessons at some point, yet behold! In one hour I could play Ode to Joy:

Please ignore the children screaming in the background. That’s normal, trust me.

It’s a lot harder to play than I thought. Stretching your hands and twisting your wrists to make chords is tough work. I was warned it would hurt my fingertips, but seeing as I compulsively chew my fingernails and skin (ewwww, yes I know) they are quite tough already.

Let’s see where some more practice gets us!

Great playing. I have often romanticised about playing a guitar so that I could sit around the campfire and have sing-alongs, then I remember that I most definitely can NOT sing.

As for moving house, I am probably the wrong person to ask as I am the worlds biggest advocate of small yards. As a result of a small yard, I spend heaps of time in local parks with the kids. Sometimes I play with the kids or meet up with friends, but most often I take along the laptop or a book and relax as they play. If we had the space for backyard cricket and tree climbing at home, I would end up inside being all domestic. I would rather be outside where I can’t see the bomb site we call home! Also, I love moving, but I have no plans for a while yet.

Great job! And I didn’t notice any screaming in the background. Well, except what was going on at my house. :)

I have the same fingernail habit, but it didn’t help me on guitar in the least. I expect it’s more to do with 36 years of piano playing. My wrists don’t want to turn upside down like that.

Well done. By the way, the chords to ‘Love is all around’ that i was telling you about are:
For the verses: D, E minor, G, A7. 4 downstrums for each chord, 4/4 time.
For the chorus: G, E minor, G, D, G, E minor, G, A7.
Trust me, look up the chords- they are super easy. Some chords are tough but these ones are easy and then the song sound really good. :-)
