Celebrating the Olympics…kinda

August 8, 2008

I’m torn about the Olympics.

I love the Olympics. Really, I do. The Sydney 2000 Olympics was one of the greatest pleasures of my life. It was a pleasure and a privilege to live there at the time, especially since we moved shortly after it had finished.

But I don’t know…this year, I’m concerned for everyone’s safety. I’m concerned about certain issues surrounding human rights being overlooked or neglected. I’m sad it’s not ‘only’ going to be about the sport – which I know is rather a disingenuous statement: it’s like saying the Oscars are ‘only’ about the art and not the politics, too. I hope I’m wrong.

Has it ever only been ‘about’ the sport alone? I wonder. But that’s another subject.

Let’s focus on today: today, in the spirit of all that’s good and hopeful about the ancient tradition, we had a pre-Olympics party.

Note the awesome homemade ‘torches’.

{Thanks, nanna.}

Right, well, it’s 6.30pm-ish now. Pretty soon we’ll settle in to watch the opening ceremony. Fingers crossed the whole shebang – over the next two weeks – goes off without a hitch.

Unfortunately, I don’t think you can get a crowd of folks together without there being some kind of issue about something. Heck, during my days working at a daycare, we had a Thanksgiving party, and one mother was so offended that her daughter was wearing a feather head dress (we had made those — and pilgrim hats — out of construction paper), that she yanked her kid from the daycare, claiming it was offensive to Native Americans and politically incorrect. And I am saddened that a country with such a terrible human rights record would score the Games, since its supposed to be about the spirit of healthy human competition.

Still, I love your Olympic spirit…and the torches. And what are the yummy-looking white triangles with the lovely sprinkles?

Pre-olympic party, what a great idea however I don’t think I would survive if my kids were still up now. I think that we will have an Olympic breakfast and watch (or sleep through) the encore presentation with the kids at the civillised hour of 9am.

D – LOL. Those are the time honoured Aus tradition called ‘fairy bread’ – white bread spread with butter and then decorator sprinkles on top. Tre’ classy!

del – This is is exactly what we’re going to end up doing! I went to bed. Didn’t realise how late I was going to have to be up to!

I’m glad someone else asked about the fairy bread. That would be HUGE in our house! When I was a kid we had butter and sugar sandwiches. Yep, like your fairy bread, only sugar instead of sprinkles. Not NEARLY as festive!

The Olympics is when I miss having TV. Maybe some things will be on the net.
I too am a bit disappointed over China getting the games. Then again, why on earth they were ever granted “most favored nation” status (by us, embarrassingly enough) with their abominable human rights record is more than I can fathom also. Hopefully people can focus on the athletes, who will focus on the sport.

I fell asleep waiting for Australia to come out in the parade in the Opening ceremony. I was expecting them to be nice and early, like usual, for the western alphabet- until my boyfriend told me that they would be coming out third last (presumably due to Australia’s name in the Chinese alphabet).
Still, at 1am he prodded me on the lounge and said ‘they’re coming up next.’ We watched them in their lovely blue Sportscraft outfits and then went straight off to bed.
Go the Aussies!!
There are often political issues at the Olympics which threaten to overshadow people’s memories of the games themselves. Munich, Moscow…

That is so cute, I love the enthusiasm!! Shame I only enjoy the gymnastics and diving, which never seem to be on when I switch over to Channel 7…
