Observations on World Youth Day from a youth

July 16, 2008

Sydney is whipped up in a vibrant, Catholic* frenzy this week on account of the Pope being in town and World Youth Day.

A news report was just on giving an update on the fesitivities. The footage showed lots of kids running around, waving flags and banners and such.

“Look mummy, it’s a great big circus!” exclaimed my son, pointing at the screen.

Little does he know his grandmother will be joining them on Saturday.

*There’s two words you don’t often see joined up.

** Hey, I’m Catholic, I’m allowed to make jokes.

Being the son of an excommunicated Catholic, I don’t really understand A) the excitement behind seeing the Pope, and 2) the draw of World Youth Day. I’d think the last thing anyone would want is such a large gathering of kids. I remember what I was like as a teen…and that’s just bad news waiting to be reported.
