Ah, sisters

June 17, 2008

My sister is staying with us for a few precious days; days where I might actually be able to claim some mental health time and get out for some air and do some book-related jobs on my own. This is a rarity and I cherish the opportunity immensely.

That’s not to say that we don’t squabble or tease each other. For example, when we collected my sister from the gate at the airport, she cocked her head to the side and stared at mine.

“Your new haircut,” she said. “It reminds me of someone…someone famous…I just can’t quite place it…”

“I look like Bette Midler in her ‘career slump’ era in Beaches,” I said glumly, not having a good hair day. “That, or Cruella de Ville in 101 Dalmatians.”

Well her eyes lit up and she doubled over, hooting with laughter and I joined her because, well, it was funny. And true, unfortunately.

And only sisters can sit and inspect each other to see who has the hairier back (note: I do.)

Ah, sisters. They can be great.

Well, most of the time they can be…

I did also say that it looks a little Monroe-esque from when her hair had that textured curly look…which is I think a prettier comparison…

I don’t have a sister. But I used to dress my brother up in girls clothes with makeup and purdy ribbons. And now I refer to him as ‘The big girly man’

That counts right?

Oh and he has the hairier back, but I can give him a run for his money with the leg hair thing in winter…

And here, my sister and I used to literally kick the snot out of one another. Of course, maybe it’s different when it’s a boy and a girl.

My sister and I bicker constantly. Although we did quite well last month when we went on our mini-vacation with our Mom (and without our kids). We don’t compare back hair, but we see whose belly is most accordion-like. (Mine, but she weighs more.)

Oh, don’t get me wrong, we used to kick the living snot out of each other too! It wasn’t fun anymore once she got to be as strong as me ;)
