Having a movie cull

VHS Glory!

As I’ve been saying over this past week, we’re having a big clean-up. The other day I came across our old VHS collection hidden at the back of the cupboard. So the question is: do we chuck these out or keep them? I personally don’t like buying DVD replacements when there’s a perfectly functional video lying around.

If these were yours, what would you keep? What would you chuck?

(Yes, that is Meet Joe Black. I think I’m one of the few people who liked it. Tease me if you wish – I can take it.)

I would certainly keep Meet Joe Blake. What a great movie that is. I also loved, Meeting Chauncy Gardner (or a similar title). I thought I was the only person in the world to love that movie until I happened upon a statistics professor who also liked the movie…..we both laughed and decided that regression to the norm was occurring and that we would be unlikely to ever meet another person who raved about the movie as we did.

I say keep the videos until they are mouldy and unwatchable.

We threw out our VHS player last year. Just never watched the tapes anymore. Still have the VTR hooked up to the computer, it plays VHS and mini-DV tapes through the PC.

I am not one for re watching movies. We tossed boxes of them the last move, and the player.

I gave our entire collection of VHS movies to my mother when we bought a DVD player. This was at about the same time she was stuck at home with cancer (she’s recovered, thanks) and didn’t have the energy after her chemo to do anything except watch movies. We bought a few of them again as DVDs, but most of them I haven’t missed at all. They’re still at her house, which might be the equivalent of being hidden in the back of a cupboard. If you haven’t missed these, get rid of them. If you want to replace any of them with DVDs you can do so quite cheaply these days.

We culled our VHS collection years ago in one of the moves and pretty much just gave them away.

The problem I face is with the first generation DVDs and the later released ‘special editions’ – especially a problem with the Star Trek collection.

Seeing it in your list reminds me that I have a Face-Off DVD that you have to turn over halfway through the film grrrrrrrrrrrr.

‘Dracula’ – do you remember doing the 24 hour famine at your place and watching Bram Stoker’s Dracula…. Classic! Keanu Reeves was sooooooooo, OMG what a teeny crush I has on that man.

Keep them, chuck them what ever! Just remember once they are gone they are gone… So if there is one or two in particular that has really special memories for whatever reason, chuck the cover into a memory chest if not the hole tape for those nostalgic days. At least if you keep the video itself you can show the kids when we are old the primitive technology we has to put up with :)

Have fun cleaning, don’t envy you one bit.

Not only did I love Meet Joe Black (despite Brad Pitt’s later exhortations that his performance was “wooden”), but I bought the soundtrack. Breathtaking, I tell you!

Anyway, I would more than likely keep all of those videos. Clothing I can part with. Movies, music and literature, not so much. But if you absolutely have to part with any of those…I guess I’d vote for the white one above Dangerous Liaisons, since I can’t tell what it is.

Right, I think its decided then I’ll get rid of the lot – EVEN Braveheart, which is my fav movie ever.

But Dracula – as Tassja says – holds a senitmental place in my heart ;)

D.Paul – oh, failthful friend, I knew I could count on you :)

The white video I think is the original “That’s Entertainment”. One of my ‘things’ is an obesssion with old Hollywood. I’ve never seen them to buy, so perhaps I should hold on to them too…….

I’d say keep them. They’re good titles. They obviously weren’t in your way, unless you need to put other stuff in that cupboard. We have both tapes and DVDs, because like you I see NO reason to spend money on replacements until they’re worn out. (I anxiously await Disney’s rerelease of 101 Dalmatians on DVD to replace our badly damaged and hard-to-watch VHS copy.)
