Surely an indictment regarding the coffee-culture institutionalisation of my daughter

February 24, 2008

Keira, to a waitress while we’re ordering in a cafe: “I’ll have a babycinno in a mug, please.”

Fantastic! Hope they did oblige.

On the other hand, have you noticed how hard it is to order a glass of milk for a child in a cafe? ‘Do you mean a babycino in a glass?’ the waitress asks, her eyes darting from side to side as though seeking an escape route.
‘No, like a glass. Of milk,’ I explain patiently.
‘Oh no, we don’t do that. We could get her a fruit juice or a Coke.’
No wonder our kids are getting fatter.

Well, I don’t think the waitress heard, actually (and that might be a good thing!)

Stella – yes it can be! And usually it’s “no, you can only get it flavoured” luckily, where we live there are two places that do it. Otherwise you’re asked to split a milkshake but even that’s beside the point!

Haha, that’s awesome! But it could have been much worse. I was standing in line for the coffee yesterday and a little girl (about eight or nine) asked for a “large cappuccino, one sugar”. I was shocked. But then I thought maybe she was ordering it for her mother or someone.

I’m a slave to the coffee-culture. I would have been so proud. In fact, while I was pregnant I found a gorgeous baby tee that said, “Babycino, per favore”. I just barely managed to not buy it.

Gorgeous!
