The healthy eating plan isn’t working

February 11, 2008

I’m currently suffering the “2-day post-shopping syndrome”. Perhaps you know of it?

Symptoms: You stand in front of the open refrigerator, elbow crooked up on the door for extra comfort, and stare at the contents within. You only did the groceries two days ago, but already there are holes. All the ‘extras’, those ‘goodies’ you bought yourself as a ‘treat’ for successfully completing the mundane, are long gone.

Like that mango? Or that 97% fat-free mousse? (BOTH of them?!) Nup – they’re history.

So now you’re on the second-rung of foodstuffs: those products you fling in the cart because they are cheap and you know get eaten, because you are not going to get burned again on that six-freaking-dollar punnet of blueberries which lasted a grand total of ten seconds. Nope – dependable bananas are on the menu. Old faithful apples.

The problem is: you don’t want to eat those. They are boring.

So what do you do? You slather a bit of butter on bread, with some honey, and guzzle that down because it tastes nice and its quick and because the kids are pulling at your leg but if you don’t eat something quickly your blood sugar levels will plummet and you’ll faint and the kids will jump on you because they think you’re playing a game and then not only will you be hungry but nursing internal injuries. And! And!…

You get my point.

No wonder the weight’s creeping back on….

Do you suffer ’2DPSS’? How do you combat its evil power? Just buy more of the good stuff?

I try very had to not buy the things that I really really like as I know they will vanish far too quickly. Nutella, for instance, never makes it into my shopping basket whereas multigrain bread and tuna always does.

yeah, I just buy more of the good stuff. Actually I buy heaps of the good stuff. I buy enough of the good stuff I actually eat to last the week. A little more expensive? Sure, but at least I’m eating properly and that’s worth it in the long run.

I have that problem. Mine is more that any treats I bring into the house get inhaled by hubby the second he walks through the door. Even stuff for the girls, one of the main reason I’ve switched to non-food based rewards for them.

I know the ’2DPSS’. Only it’s more to do with chocolate or biscuits and nothing healthy. Mango? Pffft. And it’s usually ’1DPSS’.
Ms 12 has been making some cakes recently, and complaining about how much disappears while they are at school. Yesterday she made one with apple and walnuts, and it didn’t really appeal to me. They think they should make that one all the time now. So there’s some left when they come home from school.

My problem is not that I don’t have the goodies – I buy the goodies just to taunt myself AND I also bake. I baked double on the weekend (as I cannot next) so I have far too many goodies waiting to surprise V on his midnight rampages or for his or ‘Salina’s lunchboxes. That and the packet of S&V (my major weakness) hidden in the back of the pantry.

I somehow think that denying yourself when it is there is worth more calorific consideration than denying yourself at the shops.

That way, you deny yourself for say 4 days = 8 x the calorific amount = 7 x as much brownie points when you finally fold and start devouring!

I read this GREAT book about eating habits called Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink. One of the studies he cites says that even if you buy your favorite goodies in bulk, odds are good that you won’t finish the whole box, because you get tired of them first.

So it sounds like the solution might be to buy more goodie foods in high variety. It sounds like you’re already smart enough to buy healthy ones. Seriously.

Hmm….well sometimes Jordan. Sometimes! I try to economise mostly though – who doesn’t these days, especially over here where all our food prices are rising due to drought.

By the sounds of it, many others are also tackling this subject too!

I go shopping again ….because it is my teen who inhales all the good treats … leaves all the boring stuff like carrots.
Now we are going to buy a cupboard and put a lock on it . No mention of what i inhale… but then it’s my money and nursing still rocks my scales.
I have no advice – always eat in moderation … back away , put down the honey and put your hands up – stay away from the fridge.
Hide the car keys.

It reminds me of Eating Amnesia: the kind where you say, “Hey where’s that pound bag of M&Ms I had sitting here while I was blogging? It can’t be gone already!”

I make weekly menus complete with snacks and desserts. This way I know exactly what to buy and what to eat. Boring I know but it does save us money and keeps us eating healthish

It’s so easy to eat unhealthy – of course it’s easy to eat fruit too.. it’s just not very fun. Find honeycrisp apples – those things are soooooo good. When I can find those I will eat them until they’re gone – I just can’t find them very often. And when I do I eat them with half a jar of caramel.
