All day Wednesday Keira had been walking around saying she, “Had a secret.” Which would be okay, I guess, except that she wouldn’t tell me what it is, kept deferring when she would tell me: “I’ll tell you after lunch.” “I’ll tell you after preschool.” “I’ll tell you when dad gets home.”
This was all a little…unsettling, but I didn’t push it.
Then that afternoon, she told me.
“I heard a noise last night. That’s my secret.”
Mental check? Snuggle night? Nope – that can’t be it. Phew.
“What did you hear?” I asked, hoping it wouldn’t be the answer she, in fact, gave me.
“I heard the mouses (sic) in the roof.”
Oh, crap. I thought they were only disturbing us. This situation is getting out of hand.
And it’s really starting to drive us nuts. Adam and I are checking out real estate in the area.
It’s gotten to that point.

I read in the paper last weekend that the woman who wrote the Spotless books says that for mice (and I would hope possums) that snake droppings are the best thing for keeping mice away as they HATE the smell of it, but humans can’t smell a thing. And apparently due to the success of the book zoos have been storing up all their snake droppings, bagging it and selling it to the public.
Might be worth investigating…
really?! What’s the number for the zoo?!
On a similar note, a pest guy said on his last visit that we buy rubber/toy snakes from a $2 shop because rodents HATE the SIGHT of snakes, real or otherwise. I said I thought we’d look right silly in the neighbourhood with plastic snakes arrayed on the rooftop.
But if it works…..hmm…….
Wow, that’s really interesting Shelly.
I suppose you could ask any of the major zoos in the city whether they sell snake poo…
You have a designated snuggle night?????
Wow, you are organised!

Rubber snakes would be the cheapest option. Go for it. Put them in the attic, under the eaves, and anywhere obvious that the mousies would see them. You do NOT want your home to be a mouse pad.
