Who On Earth Cares

People may be aware of Cate Blanchett doing the ads for Who On Earth Cares on television, but has anyone actually gone to the website yet? Yes? No? Maybe you should.

I hasten to add I have not been paid to promote this site at all and perhaps wouldn’t except for this nice little feature:

Once you join, you have the option to have an open letter automatically generated to send to your local MP regarding climate change and taking general environmental responsibility. I printed mine off and sent it – and my local member is no other than Jenny Macklin, former deputy leader of the Labor Party and now newly appointed minister for family, housing, community services and indigenous affairs minister. (Fitting, really, seeing this is a family-devoted and interested blog.)

Our new government has been elected – arguably – for the promises it has made to take responsibility for climate change*. Maybe if we all join and print our letters it’s our way of saying, “Okay, we’re watching you……”

Actually, that’s exactly what might happen. Because for every single letter a politician gets from their constituents they assume that another 200 people feel the same way**.

So in the New Year, how about some letter-dropping?

Anyone wanting some badges or buttons like you can see in my right column, go to their MySpace page.

*As well for other policies and promises, yes, I realise.

Cate’s a fine actress, and it looks a very worthy site.

I blogged about it and sent of letters a few months ago when the site launched. I guess it would be a good idea to now resend the letters to new MPs.

That is interesting about one letter representing 200, I had often wondered if they really do sit up and listen when 10-20 people send them the same letter.

Thanks for the info on 1 letter = 200 people, gives me pause to rethink the argument of “they don’t read anything ” and hope !

I just registered… Thanks for the link, my only disappointment is that the site doesn’t offer the MP’s email address. I would really prefer to email than post.

re: 1 to 200 ratio. I HOPE it’s true. I don’t suppose anyone could verify it 100%, but still, its nice.

TassjaLi – Good on you girl! Good detective work :)
