The sadness of passing youth – theirs, not mine, (for a change)

November 23, 2007

“Mummy! Mummy”

I become groggily awake, and look at the clock. 6.38am. Okay, that’s a fair enough time to get up.

“Mummy! Mummy!”

“KEIRA – I’m coming. Give me a ‘sec.”

I throw a robe on, and stumble out into the hallway, where I meet a similarly groggy child, rubbing her eyes.

“Mummy! Mummy!”

The call was not hers; it was my son, in his cot.

He can speak almost as well as his sister, and he’s 22 months younger. I’d mistaken his cries, for hers.

He is losing all his ‘baby’.

For a moment, that made me indescribably sad. I think I even sagged against the wall.

“Come on, mum. Let’s get Riley,” said Keira as she took my hand.

And so we did. My babies; my kids.

It’s going too fast.

Edited to add: Happy Thanksgiving weekend to all my friends who are celebrating it!

Just wait until they discover that droning, whinging, dragged out tone of mu-um! muuu-uuum!

MUUUUU-UUUUUUUM!!!!!! :-)

Sometimes too fast, other times – not fast enough! I look at my eleven year old and think “When did you finish kindergarten?” I remember it like it was just yesterday.

Hugs. Yeah it is hard. You blink and their breasts are almost as big as yours…… hopefully that will be Keira not Riley!

Big hugs to you,
It is so hard. It goes way too fast.
It doesn’t get any easier, watching them grow.
