I must’ve been thirsty for good prose. I gulped this down in a matter of days, and like the glutton I am, now I’ve finished, I realise I didn’t savour the taste so very well, and now I regret my hurry.
Stripped back, it’s the story of a girl’s escape from a fundamentalist mother and religious community, as she comes to terms with some own aspects of her personality.
Although it is quite stylised, the writing is also extremely readable, which is a testament to Winterson’s talent, and now I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for others she’s written.
I’m sorry – but that’s the best review I can do while I’m sick!
