Underneath all this natural mulch are stones which we laid, but the persistant weeds have grown through, as evidenced here…

I want to bobcat all the ground back to some sort of levelness (hard to do when you live on an incline) and pave the whole darn lot. Adam thinks it would be a complete waste of money because there is no drainage to speak of. Turfing with grass is out of the question because the area receives next to no sunshine. And the stones haven’t worked.
What other options are we left with? Anyone have any ideas?

Sadly, I have no aptitude for landscaping. So I am next to no help in that aspect. Sorry. However, I can say that the backlighting in the photo with the tree is fantastic!
Head to the garden center store — one that only sells plants. And have them come out and do a plan for you. THey’ll know what grows where, and what to do about drainage, and all that stuff. The store usually does it for free, as they expect you to buy the plants there. You’re not obligated to implement their ideas or buy from them, but you will definitely learn a lot.
Backyard Blitz?
It’s tough to say. A desert-type area might look good
I wrote backyard blitz when I was pregnant with Keira. I got a ‘thanks but no thanks’ back.
We had one landscaper come by y’day. He proposed turning the area into a kind of secret glade fernery, which is something I’d never thought of!
